# Answer engine optimization (AEO)

Short answer: Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is writing and structuring your pages so that search engines and AI assistants can pull a direct answer from them, such as a featured snippet or a quoted line in an AI reply. The aim is to be the answer to one specific question.

## Why does AEO matter for a clinic?

Patients ask questions long before they ask for an appointment. How long does Invisalign take? Does an implant consult cost anything? How many laser sessions will I need? Whoever answers those questions clearly tends to be the clinic the patient remembers.

A med spa that answers how long filler usually lasts on its own page, in plain words and in the first paragraph, hands search tools something to quote. A page that hides the answer under a hero video and three paragraphs of welcome hands them nothing.

## How does answer engine optimization work?

Most AEO work is rewriting. Take the question a patient actually types, put it in a heading, and answer it in the first sentence underneath.

> Example
>
> Before: Welcome to our clinic, where our caring team has served the community with a passion for smiles.
>
> Question heading: How long does a first consultation take?
>
> After: A first consultation takes about an hour, including time to talk through your goals and ask questions.

- Use the patient's words in headings, as questions where it fits.
- Answer in one or two sentences first, then add the detail.
- Keep one question per section so a tool can lift it cleanly.
- Mark up FAQs with structured data only when the answers are visible on the page.

Quiz show contestants get no points for a lovely preamble. The buzzer rewards whoever gives the answer first and clearly. Answer engines behave in much the same way.

## How is AEO different from GEO?

AEO aims to be the quoted answer to one question. [GEO](https://agentblue.io/glossary/generative-engine-optimization) aims to get your clinic named in AI-written answers more broadly, which depends on your reputation across the web as well as your own pages. In practice AEO is one of the tools GEO relies on: clear answers on your site make it easier for an AI tool to say something accurate about you.

The honest catch: a perfect answer can be quoted without a click. Some patients will read your answer on the results page and never visit, so judge AEO by enquiries and bookings and treat traffic as a side signal.

## Frequently asked questions

### What are examples of answer engine optimization?

A clinic FAQ page with one clear answer per question, a service page that opens with what the treatment is and who it suits, and a pricing page that gives a range in place of "call us". Each one hands a search tool a sentence it can quote.

### Is AEO the same as writing FAQs?

FAQs are one format. Service pages, location pages and blog posts all benefit from a question-shaped heading followed by a straight answer.
