# Schema markup

Short answer: Schema markup is a standard set of labels, added to a page's code, that tells search engines what the facts on the page mean: this is a dental practice, these are its opening hours, this is a question and its answer. Visitors never see it.

## Why does schema markup matter for a clinic?

Search engines read pages well, though they still guess. Schema removes some of the guessing: the phone number is marked as the phone number, the page as a dental practice, the list of questions as an FAQ. Machines are diligent readers with no sense of context, a bit like a new hire on day one.

For a med spa with several locations, marking each one with its own address and hours helps search engines match the right clinic to the right searcher.

## How does schema markup work?

Schema uses a shared vocabulary from schema.org, written into the page as a small block of JSON-LD, the format Google recommends. Each block names a type, such as Dentist, MedicalClinic or FAQPage, and fills in its details.

> Example
>
> { "@type": "Dentist",
>
> "name": "Example Dental Studio",
>
> "telephone": "+1-555-0100",
>
>   "openingHours": "Mo-Fr 08:00-17:00" }

Grocery shelves work because every jar has its label in the same place: name, weight, ingredients. Nobody has to open the jar to find out. Schema puts that kind of label on a web page.

## Is schema markup a ranking factor?

Google describes structured data as a way to understand a page and to make it eligible for richer listings in search; it does not describe it as a ranking boost. The value is in being understood correctly, which matters more as AI tools summarise pages. It also differs from [llms.txt](https://agentblue.io/glossary/llms-txt): schema has documented support from the major search engines, which is why it comes first.

The honest catch: markup has to match what the page shows. FAQ markup for answers that are missing from the page, or review stars you awarded yourself, can get the markup ignored or the page penalised, so mark up only what visitors can see.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need a developer to add schema markup?

Not always. Many website builders and SEO plugins add basic schema, and a developer can add the rest in an afternoon. Check the result with Google's Rich Results Test.

### Which schema types suit a clinic?

Usually a clinic type such as MedicalClinic or Dentist with address, hours and phone for each location, BreadcrumbList for navigation, and FAQPage only where a real FAQ appears on the page.
